I can’t lie to you about your chances, but you have my sympathies.

First, a recap of the earlier entries on my list of favorite extraterrestrial species on film:
- Number 5 – The Mangalores from The Fifth Element
- Number 4 – The Bugs from Starship Troopers
- Number 3 – The Strangers from Dark City
- Number 2 – The Heptapods from Arrival
And now, my absolute favorite extraterrestrial species on film: the alien from Alien.
The alien—or “xenomorph”—is another man-in-a-costume film extraterrestrial, but that doesn’t bother me. It has acid for blood. It has two mouths and no eyes. It’s fast and stealthy and brutal. And its lifecycle is as horrifying as it is interesting. What other movie antagonist delivers so much peril?
Later movies in the Alien franchise reveal that the alien, this perfect organism, was artificially engineered, and that’s not nearly as interesting as it being the product of natural evolution. In fact, it’s boring as hell. Oh well.
Stay safe out there.
